Statuette, Maria met Kind - 40 cm - Wood, Gold plated

Beautiful hand-carved and hand-painted (polychrome) wooden devotional statue of the famous Black Madonna of Montserrat, affectionately called La Moreneta. The statue is a faithful and characteristic rendering in Romanesque/medieval style, inspired by the world-famous original from the Benedictine monastery in Catalonia, Spain.
Maria is depicted seated on a throne with an imposing crown on her head. In her right hand she holds the imperial orb, the symbol of the cosmos and her royal dignity. On her lap sits the Child Jesus, also crowned, who makes a blessing gesture with his right hand.
The statue has a lived-in look with characteristic warm colors (deep red and ochre yellow). There are no stamps or brand names present, which is typical for these authentic forms of religious folk art.
