Hugo Claus, born April 5, 1929 in Bruges and died March 19, 2008 in Antwerp, is a Belgian writer, poet, playwright, screenwriter and director who wrote in Dutch.
Author of the famous Chagrin des Belges, he participated in the collective creations of the Cobra group painters.
Alongside Guillaume Corneille, Henny Riemens (1928-1992), the painter’s first wife, followed the Cobra group at every moment and provided essential testimony about the group as a photographer. Most books on the Cobra movement also reproduce images by Henny Riemens, widely circulated in the following decades. Passionate about Lévi-Strauss’s writings and early documentary reports on Africa, the couple embarked in 1956 on the audacious project of crossing Africa by jeep to be in total immersion.
