AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

[Buddhist Art / Southeast Asia] Rare miniature votive stupa (Cedi / Phra Chedi) in sculpted, lacquered, and gold-leafed wood – Thailand / Laos (Rattanakosin / Lanna Style)

Gorgeous and elegant miniature votive stupa (Cedi) sculpted from a single-piece of wood, finished with traditional lacquer and radiant gold leaf gilding.

Subject & Architecture:
Slim structure representing a traditional Thai/Laotian cedi with a polygonal/square base carved in steps (Mondop / tiered terraces).

The elongated upper part consists of a bell-shaped dome (Andam) topped by a conical spire made of stacked rings (Chattravat), ending in a perforated tip to originally accommodate an umbrella or a precious attribute.

Technique & Material: Hand-carved monoxylous wood, prepared with dark lacquer (lacquer rak) and then entirely covered with gold leaf gilding.

Origin / Style: Southeast Asia – Thailand or Laos (Rattanakosin or Northern Lanna style).

Dimensions:
Height: 19 cm

Overall condition: Very beautiful and fine condition for a gilded votive wood piece
Patina & Wear: Superb antique gilding well preserved, showing fine signs of use and age as well as authentic losses of gilding at the base revealing the underlying dark preparatory lacquer. Base in raw wood showing traces of era-typical cutting.
