Description and art-historical appraisal:
The painting depicts the Evangelist John in a pose of intense mystical inspiration, with the face turned upward and immersed in a warm light emerging from a dark background. The composition, of strong emotional impact, recalls rubensian models for its dynamic, chromatic quality and the rendering of the flesh. The work is attributable to a high-level workshop production of the Antwerp circle, with evident stylistic affinities attributable to the circle of Jacob Jordaens. The piece draws inspiration from Saint John the Evangelist depicted by Rubens in the right panel of the Diptych of the Lamentation over the Dead Christ (Fig. 11), currently housed at the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp. The same prototype was used by Antoon van Dyck for a similar painting (Fig. 12), currently housed at the National Museum of Oslo (Norway).
