Description from the seller
Hortense Bataille-Watkins lives and works in Marseille. After studying at the Caen School of Fine Arts and in several Paris studios, she deepened her practice of watercolor, oil, and dry pastel for seven years in the United States alongside renowned American and Spanish painters, including Sebastian Capella, Joan Grine, and Wolf Kahn.
Nourished by gardens, landscapes, living nature, and the Mediterranean shores, her universe does not seek to reproduce reality. Hortense interprets it with poetry, on the border between figuration and dreamlike imagery, to reveal its full vitality.
Her signature stands out for bold collages and a radiant palette: almost fluorescent anise greens, lemon yellows, zingy yellows, and blues—turquoise or indigo—answering one another in a true fireworks of colors. Each shade is chosen with extreme delicacy, to make the canvas vibrate and to evoke an immediate emotion.
Elegant, feminine and deeply dreamlike, her painting offers a sense of happiness, as if nature suddenly flooded our view with light and joy. An invitation to immediate happiness.
She has recently trained in art therapy and now leads intuitive painting workshops, offering a space for emotional expression, release, and creative exploration guided by intuition.
With Bormes-les-Mimosas, the artist offers an intimate and luminous vision of Provence. Two large trees occupy the foreground and frame the view, revealing in the distance the colorful façades of the village, the cypress trees, and the reliefs of the Mediterranean landscape.
The dark silhouettes of the trunks contrast with a bright blue sky, while pinks, purples, and soft greens bring depth and warmth to the composition. The roots and shadows crossing the foreground give the whole a very pronounced graphic rhythm.
This canvas evokes the calm of a summer morning in Bormes-les-Mimosas, between the freshness of the woods, the southern light, and the charm of a Provençal village. An expressive and warm work that brings color and character to any interior.
