Artist biography:

Enric Beltrán Messa (Valencia 1940-2006). Contemporary landscape painter based in Besalú (Girona).
He began his artistic training at the San Carlos Higher School of Fine Arts in Valencia, finishing it at the Sant Jordi in Barcelona.

To broaden his studies he undertook several trips to Paris, Rome, Vienna, London… He held successive exhibitions in Barcelona, Valencia, Madrid, Terrassa, Banyoles, La Bisbal, Besalú, Torroella de Montgrí, Sabadell, Lloret, Ripoll and Murcia.

He also participated in various competitions in Valencia and Barcelona.

Many of his works are currently in collections in our country and others distributed in Germany, France, the United States, Saudi Arabia, etc.

Talking about the life and work of Beltrán Messa invites us to look at nature and the urban environment. But it is undoubtedly in the former where he feels most at ease. Trained in a classical manner, he conveys equal parts serenity and balance in the manner of Claudio de Lorena and the innovation represented by the Barbizon School and the Impressionists.

Hidden valleys, streams, mountains, ox-drawn carts… and Man. The perfect harmony in its natural context. Yellows, greens and ochers dominate in a well-defined palette that he applies either pure or through subtle mixtures to compose the life that vibrates in all its splendor. And the sea: very white constructions and boats beached on the shore bring memories of a mythical and ancestral Mediterranean. A nuanced Luminism permeates the masterful treatment of light and color.

The results continue to be surprising when Beltrán Messa steps onto the asphalt of the big city. Barcelona was the artist’s preferred model in those cases and, even then, nature remained very present in boulevards full of flowers and in clouds on the verge of rain. Beltrán Messa’s city is a pulsating entity, capable of surpassing the human being who inhabits it. And just as in his rural landscapes, rain is an essential part of the narrative, with umbrellas blooming like mushrooms in an environment of devilishly heavy traffic where one only misses the sound of horns.

He also does not shy away from experimenting with less traditional techniques than oil on canvas. Newspaper clippings enrich his work with photographic nuances when he allows himself the license of collage. Honest art in the service of feelings laid bare, values of the soul.
