Albert Isidore De Vos (1868–1950) - Vissersboot op zee

A very atmospheric and characteristic oil painting on canvas by the renowned Belgian marine painter Albert Isidore De Vos (1868–1950). The work depicts a traditional wooden fishing boat with a rigged sail gliding through the calm swell.

De Vos excelled at capturing the mood at sea and, in his life, frequently joined fishermen during nocturnal fishing trips. This is clearly felt in this work: the mystical, misty atmosphere is beautifully rendered with a subtle, warm palette of soft purples, ochre, and gray.

The burning lights aboard the vessel reflect vividly in the ripples of the sea. In the background, through the mist, the silhouette of a second ship can be discerned.
