The place designation “Menton au Cap Martin” on the back refers to the area between Menton and Cap-Martin on the French Riviera. This landscape was popular around the turn of the 19th to the 20th century with numerous painters.

The painting depicts a moody Mediterranean coastal landscape with gnarled, wind-sculpted trees, light-colored rocks by the shore, and the deep blue of the Mediterranean Sea. In the background are further coastal stretches and presumably the foothills of the Maritime Alps. The warm color palette, the lively play of light and shadow, as well as the impasto, at times loose and spontaneous brushwork, lend the painting an impressionistic character.
