Description from the seller
Superb and important Art Nouveau-era paper knife (letter opener) from circa 1900, crafted in solid brass (brass bronze) of very fine workmanship, heavy and perfectly balanced.
The handle is magnificently sculpted in high relief. It depicts a female allegory (nymph) with long flowing hair that blends organically along the blade. The face emerges from a delicate naturalistic motif of stems and fuchsia bells, emblematic of the Belle Époque.
Notable details for collectors:
• Artist monogram: Presence of a workshop or founder's mark engraved in relief on the upper first third of the blade. The stylized and interlaced letters evoke a monogram typical of certain ateliers of the period.
• 'Grand Modèle' format: An imposing and heavy piece (31 cm, 314 grams), which also served as a paperweight on the grand desks of the era.
• Technique & Patina: Rough monobloc casting with a flat reverse showing the artisanal work of the period. Beautiful original contrasts due to handling, preserving a lovely old patina.
Dimensions & Features:
• Length: 31 cm
• Weight: 320 grams
• Material: Solid brass (brass bronze)
• Era: Circa 1900 (Art Nouveau)
• Origin: France / Western Europe
Condition:
Excellent overall vintage condition. Very beautiful golden-on-relief patina from use, enhanced by natural oxidation in the hollows that highlights the finesse of the chasing (see photos). No losses, no deformations, the tip and edge are intact.
Fast and careful shipping
