Description from the seller

Fascinating two-volume set enriched with about 400 black-and-white plates captioned in this edition that belongs to the ambitious encyclopedic enterprise of the 19th century, which aims to gather in a single collection historical, geographic, ethnographic, political, economic, and cultural knowledge -

Two volumes of plates with explanations dedicated to France, drawn from the collection L’Univers Pittoresque:

- Encyclopedic Dictionary - Part One (Monuments of Gauls, Greeks, Romans, Merovingians and Carolingians [Carolingi an])

- Encyclopedic Dictionary - Part Three (Monuments of the 15th century, the Renaissance and the Modern Times) -

Designed in the spirit of the great popular-science publications of its time, the work seeks to make accessible to the cultured reader the knowledge then available about countries, populations, institutions, cities, monuments, productions and the main historical events -

The title L’Univers expresses this desire to embrace an extremely vast field, while the phrase “history and description of all peoples” testifies to the encyclopedic ambition of presenting the different human societies through their origins, their traditions, their territories, their governments, their religions and their activities -

Collective - L’univers. History and description of all peoples. Encyclopedic Dictionary of France - 1845 - Volume I and III - Firmin Didot Frères -
Pages: 221 - 372.

Bindings in good condition, volumes in their half-basane from the period, marbled boards, wear from use, some minor defects on the covers, headcaps damaged with missing pieces, joints cracked, cracks to the spine of Volume I, worn corners, speckled edges, the spine smooth titled and ornamented with borders and gilded friezes -

Good interior condition, some stains, handsome vignette on the title page, text in two columns, volumes enriched with about 400 black-and-white plates captioned, endpapers in good condition, a pleasant overall set -
