“Landschap met paarden en personen” is an unsigned 17th-century oil painting attributed to Philip Wouverman, depicting a landscape and sold with a frame.
Description from the seller
This concerns a very recognizable painting by Philip Wouverman with horses and people.
Philip was and is known for his battlefields and white horses.
Unfortunately I cannot find a signature but actually it is one big signature.
The painting without its frame measures 30cm x 37cm.
The beautiful gallery frame is new but in the style of the 17th century.
He was the son of the Alkmaar painter Pouwels Joostensz. Wouwerman. Wouwerman was a pupil of his father and of Frans Hals. In 1638 he traveled with his fiancée to Hamburg to marry there. In 1640 he is listed in the Haarlem guild. He died on 19 May 1668 and was buried on 23 May thereafter in the Nieuwe Kerk in Haarlem.
Wouwerman is an exceptional talent and none of the horse painters of his own time, nor from later centuries, surpassed him as a draftsman and colorist. He was very popular in his time and could create demand for his work. For his paintings a lot of money was paid in the 18th century. Stadtholder Willem V even paid 4575 guilders for one canvas, more than at that time ever paid for a Rembrandt or Vermeer. Frederik de Grote had images of Wouwerman on a porcelain service redrawn and then gave it to Catherine the Great as a gift. Nevertheless Wouwerman today is hardly known, certainly among the general public.
Philip Wouwerman was the best known among the Wouwermans. In the past 1,200 works were attributed to him, nowadays half are attributed to him.
In 2009/2010 the first comprehensive retrospective of his work took place at the Mauritshuis in The Hague and in the Gemäldegalerie Alter Meister in Kassel, Germany.
