The Entombment of Christ
Oil on canvas, 84 x 67 cm
Housed in a dark wooden frame with a gilt inner slip
This painting is a period follower's version of Federico Barocci’s composition, The Entombment of Christ, the original of which was executed between 1579 and 1582 for the Church of Santa Croce in Senigallia.
The scene depicts the body of Christ being carried toward the tomb by Joseph of Arimathea, Nicodemus, and Saint John. Mary Magdalene is shown kneeling in the foreground in golden drapery, while the lower right corner features the instruments of the Passion, including the Crown of Thorns, a hammer, and pincers.
In the left background, the silhouetted stone architecture stands as an iconographical representation of the city of Jerusalem. True to Barocci’s original artistic conceit, this urban backdrop is modeled directly on the distinct Renaissance facade of the Palazzo Ducale in Urbino, blending historical biblical topography with the artist's native regional architecture.
Barocci’s original work was widely influential during the late Renaissance and early Baroque periods. Due to its popularity, the composition was frequently reproduced by contemporary workshops and northern European followers through prints and painted copies during the 17th and 18th centuries. This particular interpretation utilizes a distinct chiaroscuro approach and a varied color palette characteristic of the period's devotional art.
The canvas shows a stable paint surface with an overall pattern of fine, age-related craquelure. It is presented in a stable condition appropriate for gallery display or collection.
