Description from the seller

Fascinating religious icon from the early 20th century depicting the Madonna and Child, executed in oil on a single wooden panel. The iconography draws on the refined Byzantine and Orthodox tradition, where the Virgin Mary (identified by sacred inscriptions in the circles) gazes melancholically at the observer while holding the Christ Child. Jesus, dressed in a pink tunic and a green mantle highlighted in gold, holds between his hands an unfolded paper scroll, symbol of the Sacred Scriptures and the divine Word.
The work is enhanced by a completely gilded background that makes the halos incised in circles stand out and the elegant calligraphic inscriptions in Greek/Cyrillic characters (MPOYe IC XC). The painting technique is very careful in the details of the faces with features typically Eastern and in the geometric drapery of the garments.
Subject: Mother of God with Child (Variant Axion Estin / Scroll of the Scriptures)
Technique: Oil on panel or tempera on wood panel
Era: 20th Century
Dimensions: 37 x 27 cm
Conservation status: Excellent overall. The painted surface and the gilding are well preserved, stable and free from color losses. The back of the panel is sound, straight and bears the original hook for hanging (see attached photos for details).
Tracked shipping, professional and protective packaging suitable for transporting wooden supports.
