Madonna of the Rosary with Dominican Saints is a 17th-century Baroque oil painting on panel by the Spanish Colonial School, of European origin, and is sold with a frame.
Description from the seller
Madonna of the Rosary with Dominican Saints. 17th century
Oil on panel (cradled). 87 x 73.5 cm (+ complimentary frame)
This compelling devotional work represents a brilliant 17th-century synthesis of European Counter-Reformation iconography and the distinctive stylistic sensibilities of the Spanish Colonial Americas. Centered under dramatic, theatrical red drapery, the Virgin Mary is depicted as Himmelskönigin (Queen of Heaven), flanked by two hovering angels lowering a finely detailed crown onto her head. On her lap, the Christ Child stands confidently, draped in white linen, actively dispensing the Holy Rosary.
The highly structured composition adheres strictly to Dominican iconography, balancing two opposing devotional groups dressed in the characteristic black cappa over white habits. To the left, three Dominican friars—led by a kneeling figure traditionally identified as Saint Dominic of Guzmán—gaze upward in adoration. To the right, a symmetrical group of Dominican nuns kneels in solemn prayer. In the foreground, the stylized, geometric floor tiles feature a single fallen flower, a potent symbol of the Incarnation, purity, and the Passion.
The painting is characterized by its flattened perspective, rhythmic color contrasts, and elongated facial features with large, almond-shaped eyes—defining hallmarks of prestigious 17th-century workshop production.
Condition: Excellent structural state. The panel support features an exceptionally executed, professional parquet cradling system (parchettatura) on the reverse, ensuring long-term structural stability against environmental shifts. Frontal paint surface remains bright with deep, rich pigment saturation
Provenance: Private collection from Switzerland (Zurich region).
