Jurriën Marinus Beek (Arnhem, 5 April 1879 – The Hague, 15 October 1965) was a Dutch painter and art dealer. Although he currently does not have his own Dutch Wikipedia page, his life and work are well documented through art-historical archives such as the RKD (Netherlands Institute for Art History).
Beek was mainly active in the first half of the 20th century in the region around The Hague and Scheveningen.

Biography in brief

• Early years: He was born in Arnhem and spent a short period at the start of the century in Amsterdam, after which he returned to his birthplace.
• Scheveningen & The Hague: Around April 1929 he settled in Scheveningen on Prins Willemstraat. Later he moved to Noordeinde in the center of The Hague.
• Double role: Beek did not only work as a painter but also acted as an art dealer of his own produced works.

Style and Subjects

His oeuvre is diverse and ranges in style between impressionism, classical realism and early expressionist influences. He drew inspiration, among others, from well-known beach painters such as Jan H.B. Koekkoek. Common subjects in his paintings and watercolors include:
• Maritime scenes: seascapes, fishing boats on the Scheveningen beach and dynamic harbor views (including Rotterdam).
• Landscapes: traditional Dutch polder landscapes with cows or windmills in winter, but also Southern European panoramas around Italian and Swiss lakes.
• Cityscapes: streets and canals in cities such as Utrecht, Paris and Jerusalem.
• Still lifes and portraits: flower and fruit still lifes and well-rendered figure studies.
His paintings still regularly appear today at national and international art auctions.
