In this square format, Popsan lifts Pikachu, the Pokémon mascot, into a boat belonging to fishermen at the foot of Mount Fuji. Caught in the net among the silvery fish, he stands upright, mouth wide open and cheeks flushed. Yellow bolts blaze from his body and crackle in the meshes. On the left, a fisherman in an indigo kimono with floral patterns, a white headband tied around his forehead, tips backward, legs in the air and arms raised, above the long oar planted in the water. On the right, his green-gray-clad companion still holds the net in one hand and steps back, eyes wide, the other hand open in front of him.
Behind them, the bay is calm. Four sailing ships with white sails glide toward a village of low roofs sheltered among pines, and the snow-capped Fuji rises against a deep blue sky dotted with cream-colored clouds. Deep blue waves with white foam lash at the hull, a basket marked with the kanji 漁 sits at the rear, and a calligraphic cartouche occupies the upper left corner. Pikachu’s bright yellow erupts amid the blues. An ordinary fishing trip has just taken a turn for the worse.

A piece full of humor and light, ideal to bring a pop and Japanese touch to a collector’s interior who loves Pokémon.

Popsan and Medsan are two signatures for a single artist. Under the name Popsan, he revisits icons of popular culture by blending pop art, Japanese art, and anachronisms; under the name Medsan, he explores the worlds of medicine and anatomy. His pop works, long shown on Catawiki under the name Medsan, are now published under their own signature, Popsan. He creates at Atelier Joconde, a family-run artists’ workshop, alongside Le Yack (figurative painting) and Neo Pablo (abstraction).
