Description from the seller

Moroccan School of the 20th Century – 'Four arabe', Casablanca, 1928

Lovely watercolor on paper depicting a scene of daily life in Casablanca, entitled 'Four arabe'.

The composition depicts several people in traditional clothing gathered around a Moroccan architecture with large arcades. The free, luminous handling of the watercolor, combined with a lively drawing, reproduces with great charm the atmosphere of Casablanca at the end of the 1920s.

The work is labeled 'Casablanca' and dated August 8, 1928 on the lower right. It also bears an interesting signature to be identified.

A particularly interesting element for its provenance: an old back label reads 'Exposition artistique de l'Afrique française – Casablanca – 1er au 31 mai 1929', attesting to the work's presentation within the colonial-era Casablanca art context as early as the year following its creation.
