Description from the seller
Hand-Painted Satsuma Ceramic Bowl - Kannon and Arakan Motif - Japan - Meiji Period (1868–1912)
Refined Satsuma ceramic bowl dating to the late Meiji period (late 19th–early 20th century), showcasing excellent Japanese craftsmanship and intended for the Western export market.
The interior is richly hand-decorated with polychrome enamels and abundant raised highlights in pure gold (moriage). The main scene depicts a complex Buddhist composition featuring the deity Kannon (goddess of compassion), surrounded by arakan (the Buddha’s ascetic disciples), recognizable by their gilded halos and expressive faces rendered with exquisite detail.
The exterior wall features a continuous decorative band of wavy, stylized motifs reminiscent of coral or marine elements in shades of red and green. The base displays the characteristic cream-colored ceramic with a dense, authentic craquelure glaze consistent with the period, and a circular foot, unglazed and darkened with age, with no marks.
