This Chinese Republic-era silver 900 powder compact, dating to around 1920–1930, has richly chased decoration, a green stone cabochon and a circular Shou longevity symbol on the back.
Description from the seller
Solid silver Chinese powder box with richly chased decoration and inlay of a green hardstone of the jade type.
Circular in form with a scalloped edge, the lid features a chiselled scene depicting a figure in a traditional Chinese landscape, surrounded by floral and vegetal motifs. The center is ornamented with a polished green cabochon stone representing a sage/immortal figure, probably Shou Lao.
The surround consists of lobed compartments, each adorned with a finely chiselled flower. The interior retains its original mirror as well as the circular recess intended for the powder and the puff.
The back is engraved with the longevity symbol: a circular shou (壽).
Republic of China, circa 1920–1930.
This item has been touchstone-tested; the reagent colors to a dark red (see photos 26 & 27), indicating a pure silver content of 925 per mille (900‰ to be prudent).
Overall good condition considering its age, wear, and use, with an old patina darkened in places, some oxidation traces, metal deformations to note: the lid does not close properly, stains and marks on the mirror, scratches and micro-scratches.
Photos are part of the description.
Max dimensions:
- External diameter: 9 cm
- Diameter of the lid: 6.8 cm
- Thickness: about 1.5 cm
- Stone dimensions: 2.5 x 1.5 cm
Insured for transport, securely packaged. Delivery by Mondial Relay to door for the following countries: France, Belgium, Germany, and Luxembourg.
