Description from the seller

ANRI – Holy Family – Pair of polychrome wooden sculptures – Val Gardena, Italy

Description

Elegant pair of ANRI religious sculptures, a famous Italian craftsmanship from Val Gardena, renowned for producing artistic wooden figures inspired by the tradition of Tyrolean wood carving.

The two works depict the Virgin Mary with Child Jesus and Saint Joseph, composing a striking representation of the Holy Family.

The figures are distinguished by the delicacy of their expressions, the harmony of proportions, and the particular attention given to the drapery of the garments.

The workmanship features a polychrome finish in warm tones of natural wood, brown, and ochre, with light pinkish shading on the faces and hands.

Together they convey an atmosphere of serenity, contemplation, and spirituality.

Madonna with Child Jesus

The first sculpture depicts the Virgin Mary seated, with her head slightly inclined and her gaze directed towards the Baby Jesus, gently supported in her arms.

The Madonna wears a long robe and a mantle framing her face, characterized by soft, gathered features.

The Child is shown in a lying position, the body delicately modeled.

Particularly appreciable is the contrast between the smooth surfaces of the faces and the more pronounced treatment of the garments, which gives depth to the composition.

Saint Joseph

The second sculpture depicts Saint Joseph kneeling, with his bust slightly leaning forward.

The face, with a beard and carefully modeled hair, bears a serene and contemplative expression.

One hand is pointed downward with the palm open, while the other is raised in a delicate gesture.

The long robe features vertical folds and color gradations that enhance the woodwork.

The figure’s posture harmonizes with that of the Madonna, creating a balanced and particularly evocative composition.

This pair constitutes an interesting example of the craftsmanship of the workshop.
