Description from the seller
Beautiful Catholic home altar, also known as a versehgarnitur (sick call cross or home altar set), produced mainly in Germany between the 1930s and 1950s.
Meaning and Function
Such sets were used at home for personal prayer, but were specifically designed for the visit of a priest to administer the Last Sacraments (the Holy Anointing of the Sick or the sick's anointing) to a dying or seriously ill parishioner.
The various parts on the wooden tray each have a liturgical function:
• The crucifix with the Way of the Cross: The 14 copper reliefs around Jesus depict the 14 Stations of the Cross (the Passion of Christ).
• Copper holders: On the left and right there are candlesticks for consecrated candles.
• Glass and copper bowls: These were used to place holy water (for blessing), cotton (for taking the holy oil), and sometimes a small dish with salt or bread crumbs (to cleanse the priest’s fingers). All bowls are present.
• The inscription: At the front is the German text "IM KREUZ IST HEIL" ("In the Cross is salvation/holy healing").
Dimensions: listed in the photos.
Condition: in good condition with minimal signs of use; see photos.
Photos are part of the description. These were taken under artificial light, so the color may differ. Mood impressions are shown (AI).
It is well packed and shipped by registered mail.
