Augustin Mémin, known as “Tintin,” is a French painter born in Denain on July 24, 1910 and died on September 8, 1981. A professional telegraphist within the PTT administration, his talent was spotted and supported by the ministry’s artistic unit. During World War II, he was taken prisoner, as shown by his painting of his room at Stalag III. Passionate about Montmartre, where he enjoyed painting, he produced numerous oil landscapes and still lifes. His travels also inspired him to paint Orientalist landscapes, notably areas around Gaza and Damascus. An artist of many influences, he also captured landscapes of Champagne, the Aisne, and Provence.
