Tino Vaglieri (Trieste, 1929 – Milan, 2000) was an important Italian painter, recognized as one of the leading exponents of Existential Realism.
His artistic and biographical trajectory unfolds through crucial phases of postwar Italy:
• Existential Realism (1950s): After studies at the Brera Academy under the guidance of Aldo Carpi, Vaglieri founded and animated this movement together with colleagues such as Banchieri, Guerreschi, Ceretti, Romagnoni and Ferroni. His painting in this period tackles the harshness of the human condition and the oppression of urban reality with a language dense in pathos.
• The Informal turn (1960s): Toward the end of the 1950s his mark frees itself from the constraints of geometric drawing. In the early sixties he arrives at informal and gestural research, characterized by a strong textural application of color. In this period he exhibited at solo spaces at the Venice Biennale (1960 and 1964).
• Return to figuration: In the mature phase of his career, the artist returns to focusing on the representation of the figure, exploring the concepts of spatial relationship (inside-out, man-city) and the dramas of contemporary history.
