Lord Byron’s Œuvres complètes, a five-volume French edition published by Chez Ladvocat, Libraire between 1820 and 1822, includes Le Vampire by John William Polidori in the fifth volume and is bound in blue leather.
Description from the seller
A handsome, homogeneous set of five volumes of the works of Lord Byron, published in Paris by Ladvocat at the beginning of the 19th century.
An early French edition, including, among others, translations by A.-E. de Chastopalli.
Bibliophile note: The Vampire (1820)
The fifth volume contains The Vampire, the famous short story by John William Polidori, first published in 1819 and long associated with the name of Lord Byron.
This novella has its own title page, dated 1820, bearing the note “Nouvelle attribuée à Lord Byron,” followed by the translator’s name A.-E. de Chastopalli.
It is a landmark text in the origins of modern vampire literature, several decades before Bram Stoker’s Dracula.
Bindings and condition
Five volumes in uniform blue leather bindings, with red title pieces, borders and gilded ornaments. The covers feature diamond-shaped geometric decorations.
The bindings retain an attractive overall presentation, despite scuffing, wear at the headcaps and a few superficial leather losses.
The interiors are in very good condition for their age: paper well preserved, text clearly legible, some foxing and scattered marks.
An decorative and interesting set for collectors of English Romantic literature, old books, and fantastical literature.
