Description of the image and art-historical classification
A meandering river leads from the foreground into an open, flat landscape. On the right bank lie dark groups of trees and a small house with a reddish roof. Yellow-golden light stripes on meadows, banks and water correspond to a brightening among powerful gray-blue clouds. The low-lying horizon gives the sky special monumentality.
The image conception is representational-realistic. Its atmospheric lighting scheme refers to traditions of Romantic and late Romantic landscape depiction, without implying a direct affiliation to a particular school or a historical dating. The fine water reflections and bright grasses are particularly carefully treated.
