Description from the seller
Boy portrait - Munich School - Classical oil painting around 1880 - NOT framed!
Bust-length portrait of a young boy in three-quarter profile, conceived as a tronie. His gaze is directed slightly upward. The boy has medium-length reddish-brown hair in a pageboy cut and wears a dark jacket with a slightly lighter collar edge. Dimensions: 29 x 37 cm (approx. 11 x 14 inches).
This boy’s portrait is a high-quality oil painting of the Munich School of the late 19th century. Typical features are the chiaroscuro light-dark contrasts and the warm brown gallery tones. The style also draws on the Old Masters of the 17th century.
The canvas is stretched over a classic grooved stretcher made of softwood (spruce/pine), with wooden keys in the inner corners and a patina appropriate to its age. It is made of coarse, natural linen weave, wrapped around the sides and fixed at the edges with metal nails. The darkening of the fabric over time points to great age.
The edges of the canvas show slight signs of wear, and the coarse weave structure is clearly visible beneath the paint layer. Despite their age, the stretcher and canvas are in authentic original condition.
Based on the color palette, the canvas structure and the painting technique, the work can be placed stylistically in the late 19th century, the period of Historicism. The woodworking, the type of keys, the nailing on the sides and the discoloration of the canvas point to an origin in the zenith of the Munich School (1870 - 1890).
On the back, on the right side of the stretcher, there is a handwritten note in the cursive script of the late 19th century, identified as “München”.
