Description from the seller

White alabaster miniature of Saint Cecilia on a marble base - Dated 1892 and initialed R.M.
Description of the Lot
Refined miniature reproduction of the famous sculpture of Saint Cecilia, the Baroque masterpiece created by Stefano Maderno in 1600 (housed in the Basilica of Santa Cecilia in Trastevere, Rome).
This specimen, a high-quality typical souvenir tied to pilgrimages and the late Grand Tour period, stands out for an exceptional historical peculiarity: it bears a contemporaneous hand-engraving on the stone with the initials "P.M." and the exact date "1892". These details testify to an era-specific personalization, commissioned by the original owner to remember their journey to Rome at the end of the nineteenth century.
The figure of the Saint is delicately carved in white alabaster, a material historically preferred for the satin-like rendering of the shroud and the anatomical forms, and rests on a solid fixed base in onyx/veined marble.
Subject: Saint Cecilia (after Stefano Maderno)
Period / Date: 1892 (hand-engraved)
Material: White alabaster and onyx/veined marble base
Length: 14 cm
Condition: Good condition. The alabaster retains a beautiful antique patina. It shows minor and normal signs of time consistent with the object's age (carefully assess the overall visual condition through the attached photos).
