AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

The Dutch painter Gijsbertus Martinus Wilhelmus Franciscus (Martin) van Waning was born on 4 September 1889 in The Hague and died on 7 July 1972 in Dokkum. Besides painter he was also a medallist, watercolorist, graphic artist, etcher, draftsman and sculptor. Van Waning was the son of Gijsbertus Martin van Waning and Maria Cornelia Johanna Trijssenaar. His father was a referendaris at the Council of State and an amateur watercolorist; his uncle Kees van Waning was also a painter. Van Waning studied mechanical engineering in Delft, but after his studies he devoted himself entirely to painting. He took lessons from artists such as Charles Dankmeijer (1861-1923), Jan van Rhijnen (1859-1927) and Willem de Zwart (1862-1931) and later moved to the art center in Wiesbaden. In Germany he met the Russian Grand Duke Orlov and became his private secretary. With Orlov he traveled, among other places, through France, Italy, Spain and North Africa. In 1917 Van Waning settled again in the Netherlands, first in The Hague and from 1925 on the Veluwe.

In 1937 he moved to the Frisian island Schiermonnikoog, where he established his studio in the former seafaring school. During World War II the studio was bombed and a large part of his work was lost. In Van Waning's paintings the influence of the Hague School is clearly visible. He painted seascapes and landscapes, among other subjects.

Panel dimensions: 60 x 40 cm. Minimal damage to the corners of the frame.
