Artist biography:
Enrique Beltrán Messa (Valencia, 1940–2006) was a contemporary Spanish landscape painter who settled in Besalú (Girona). He studied at the San Carlos School of Fine Arts in Valencia and the Sant Jordi School in Barcelona, and his style developed further following trips to Paris, Rome, Vienna, and London.
Beltrán Messa specialized in rural and urban landscapes, with a marked preference for nature. His classically styled work stands out for its serenity, balance, and subtle luminosity, in the tradition of Claude Lorrain and the Barbizon School, as well as showing Impressionist influences. His palette is dominated by shades of yellow, green, and ochre; light and the Mediterranean Sea are central to his paintings, alongside scenes of lively, rainy cities such as Barcelona and Valencia.
He also experimented with mixed media, including collage using newspaper. His works are held in collections in Spain and abroad (Germany, France, the US, and Saudi Arabia). He was a prolific artist, meticulous in his drawing and attentive to detail.
In summary, Beltrán Messa is recognized for his harmonious landscapes, masterful treatment of light and color, and ability to portray nature and urban settings with great sensitivity.
