This mid-20th-century Bukhara rug from Turkmenistan measures 155 × 105 cm and is made of wool on wool, with signs of ageing and wear.
Description from the seller
A Russian-made "Bukhara" rug, woven in pure wool and characterized by a notable softness to the touch. It is an extremely pleasing artifact, striking mainly for its archaic and naive design: it features refined motifs at the ends and drawings of great interest both in the main border and in the central field. The motifs with sharply angular lines – almost like cartouches – are particularly distinctive, recalling a technique of execution that is very primitive and naive. The rug is of great interest: it undoubtedly dates back to the early phase of Russian domination in Afghanistan, while incorporating elements that evoke pieces from a much more remote era. The weave is soft and free of any structural rigidity. The fleece is in good preserved condition, except for some areas showing slight abrasion, probably attributable to overly aggressive cleaning rather than to normal use. The ends of the rug are intact, although the fringes appear slightly worn. No insect damage is detected and the rug is free of smoke or pet odors.
