A beautiful colorful Brabant landscape.
J. (Janus) Sibens decided at the age of 24 to train himself as a painter. As far as is known, he did not receive any formal training as an artist. That sometimes led to surprisingly fresh and spontaneously composed paintings, such as this landscape. According to the then-director Edy de Wilde of the Eindhoven Van Abbemuseum, he did not know the ease of routine, nor of imitation. Like all colorists, Sibens moved from gray to color; he who has learned the values of color in gray nuances can turn color into living light.
This painting is a joy to behold: the ardor splashes from all sides of the canvas.
