Description from the seller
SOFIA GIRTCIUS — WHERE THE FOREST KEEPS ITS SECRETS, 2025
Original Oil Painting — 70 × 50 cm
Unique Artwork · Wooden Stretcher, 3 cm Deep · Ready to Hang
Dark birds emerge from a woodland of deep green, charcoal and muted teal. In Where the Forest Keeps Its Secrets, Latvian artist Sofia Girtcius creates an intimate encounter with nature, where recognisable forms gradually reveal themselves within an atmosphere of mystery.
THE ARTWORK
A large bird occupies the upper centre, surrounded by smaller birds gathered around a weathered, branching form. Pale blue-grey highlights distinguish their plumage, allowing individual presences to emerge from the darker surroundings.
Girtcius builds the woodland through layered oil paint. Fine descending lines suggest hanging vegetation, while brighter, moss-like accents introduce small intervals of light. Branches, birds and foliage partially merge, encouraging the viewer to look slowly and discover connections across the surface.
The vertical composition gives the gathering a concentrated presence. Its depth develops through overlapping forms and subtle tonal differences, drawing attention from the prominent upper bird towards the quieter silhouettes below.
The title opens a poetic reading without imposing a fixed narrative. The forest becomes a place of concealment and discovery, holding a world that seems to extend beyond what is immediately visible.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Sofia Girtcius, born in 1990, is a Latvian painter whose practice brings together figurative realism, fantasy and the natural world.
Working in oil on canvas, she draws inspiration from classical art, portraiture, literature and the atmosphere of old paintings. Recognisable subjects enter imagined settings, where carefully described forms meet deep shadows and luminous passages.
Her work explores the emotions conveyed by a presence, a gesture or a figure emerging from darkness. In Where the Forest Keeps Its Secrets, this sensitivity takes the form of a woodland encounter balanced between observation and imagination.
Presented by Abstract Art Gallery, Riga.
