Description from the seller
About the possible painters and style
This painting is attributed to the Dutch School from the early 20th century. The depicted scene is a characteristic view of Giethoorn, with the narrow waterways, wooden bridges, boats and lush greenery. The loose, impasto-like brushwork, the bright color touches and the impressionistic treatment of light and vegetation strongly resemble the work of painters such as Ben Viegers (1886-1947), who in particular during this period painted landscapes in and around Giethoorn and comparable water-rich regions. Other painters from the circle of the late Hague School and the Laren or Gooise painter colonies also worked in a related style and regularly visited the Overijsselse water villages. The work is unsigned. The exact attribution is therefore up to the prospective buyer to investigate further; the style and subject clearly place it in this period and region.
This work
The painting shows a atmospheric, intimate view of a Giethoorn canal. In the foreground lie two boats at the shore, while a wooden bridge or railing cuts the composition horizontally. The lush trees and greenery are laid on with a lively, thick brushstroke, with light reflections in the water and sunny glimpses defining depth and mood. The painting technique is spontaneous and plein-air-like, with much attention to the atmospheric quality of the landscape. Executed in oil on canvas. Dimensions: 51 × 41 cm (without frame), 52 × 62 cm (with frame).
Shipping and pickup
