“Two Fish in an Aquarium” is an unsigned original oil painting from 1910–1920, attributed to the Dutch School, and sold with its frame.
Description from the seller
This painting is attributed to the Dutch School of the early 20th century and fits the genre of aquarium or fish paintings. The best-known Dutch master in this genre is Gerrit Willem Dijsselhof (1866–1924).
Dijsselhof spent hours in the Artis aquarium, where he studied fish, crabs and turtles. His paintings are characterized by a mystical, almost fairy-tale atmosphere: fish swimming among dark wood, aquatic plants and a diffuse underwater light. His style aligns with the Nieuwe Kunst, the Dutch variant of Art Nouveau (Art Nouveau / Jugendstil), in which he also played an important role as a craftsman. He began with watercolors and later switched to oil paint for his beloved aquarium scenes.Het onderhavige werk toont een verwante sfeer en onderwerp. Het is niet gesigneerd; een eventuele toeschrijving aan Dijsselhof of een tijdgenoot is daarom aan de mogelijke koper om verder te onderzoeken.
This work
The painting shows two large, graceful fish (possibly angelfish or a similar species) swimming elegantly through a greenish aquarium. The fish are rendered with attention to scales, fins and light reflections, while in the background water plants, stems and smaller fish suggest depth and underwater life. The composition is calm and atmospheric, with a soft, almost mystical lighting typical of this genre. Executed on board. Dimensions: 60 × 50 cm (without frame), 71 × 61 cm (with frame). The work is unsigned. The frame is original, but unfortunately not in perfect condition anymore.
