Description from the seller
[MISSAL ROMANUM]. Missale Romanum restored by decree of the Holy Council of Trent, issued by Pope Pius V, Pontifex Maximus, and revised under the care of other Popes, reformatted by Pius X with authority. Rome, Tournai, Société de Saint-Jean l’Évangéliste, Desclée et Cie, 1913. [Following:] Missae Ecclesiae Bajocensi propria. Tournai, Desclée, 1915. 1 vol. in-folio, red morocco, covers framed by triple gilt fillets, large gilded neo-Gothic fleur-de-lis crowned at the centre, spine with raised bands titled, gilded edges, bookmarks.
Missal for the altar issued from the liturgical reform of Pius X (1835-1914). After the constitution Divino afflatu (1911) and the motu proprio Abhinc duos annos (23 October 1913), which grant precedence to the Sunday and ease the sanctoral, this edition precedes the Typica edition promulgated in 1920 by Benedict XV (1854-1922). It was produced by the presses of the Société de Saint-Jean l’Évangéliste, founded at Tournai in 1872 by Henri (1830-1917) and Jules Desclée (1833-1911) to restore Christian art in the liturgical book. The house was printer to the Holy See and to the Congregation of Rites.
The frontispiece title is chromolithographed and gilded. It depicts the Mass of Saint Gregory: the pope, kneeling at the altar between two deacons bearing torches, sees Christ appear showing his wounds in a mandorla. Angels bearing instruments of the Passion surround him. The title is Gothic in a cartouche, with the date 1913 at the foot.
The text is in red and black in two columns, with red borders. The proper diocese of Bayeux is bound following. It appeared under the episcopate of Mgr Thomas-Paul-Henri Lemonnier (1853-1927), bishop of Bayeux and Lisieux.
Condition: binding rubbed, scratches and epidermal wear on the covers, one raised seam, corners worn, several leaves inserted, minor defects.
