AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Jøken – “Crosseyed Devil” (Blockheads series), 2022

An early work from the Blockheads painting series by the Dutch artist Korneel Jeuken, aka Jøken. The blocky head features two curved horns in black and orange, two crosses as eyes, a long turquoise nose and a wide, surprised mouth. Painted with the nose so long and in perspective, the devil looks cross-eyed. That’s where the title comes from. The result is a devil that looks more comic and vulnerable than threatening.

The Blockheads are angular figures that seem to have stepped out of a digital world, as if they want to escape the low mental resolution that that world imposes on us. They are angular but not unsympathetic. Jøken translates his drawing language into a graphic plane with thick black outlines, fields in turquoise, skin tones and rust brown, and a nod to the pixel and the cartoon.

The technique makes the work particularly special. It is painted with acrylic on a wooden panel cut in the shape of the head, and finished with a glossy epoxy resin. That gives the black and orange depth and makes the layered edge visible. Thus the piece hangs on the wall as an object. There is a hanging system on the back.

Seller's Story

Korneel Jeuken is a visual artist, cartoonist and illustrator. Under his alias Jøken, he has been making comic art paintings and drawings with a recognizable character for a number of years. The 'Blockheads' that he paints on the most diverse materials depict crazy characters, but also the need to hide as a creature behind a mask and to take on a new identity. Jøken calls the work 'New Cubism' because he has always had a fascination for the movement between the spatial and the flat surface. In his earlier work this led to abstract paintings and installations that depicted his inner world in an architectural way. It still plays a role in the current work because the figures in his world are often also built from blocks. Yet he does not want to limit himself to blocks. The making process must remain intuitive. Small sketches created in a stream of consciousness form the basis for paintings on wood, cardboard or canvas. Devils, rabbits, kings and skeletons, often dressed in suits and ties, inhabit the colorful world of Jøken: an apparently cheerful whole of neatly designed madness... Korneel Jeuken (Venray NL 1975) was educated at the St. Joost Academy and the Piet Zwart Institute and exhibited at home and abroad. He draws current cartoons for the daily newspaper De Gelderlander
