Description from the seller

Jøken – “I Changed My Mind” (Speak Out series), 2026

A painting in the form of a protest sign by the Dutch artist Korneel Jeuken, aka Jøken. On a glossy black board stand the words “I CHANGED MY MIND” in light-blue, hand-drawn letters, with a broad pink stripe running diagonally through it. The message is therefore immediately crossed out again. The sign sits on a long black handle and the sides are painted in bright red. On the wall, the work becomes a long, sleek vertical composition that immediately draws the eye.

The work comes from the Speak Out series, a collection of protest signs that, in colorful, graphic compositions, display statements that no one is wiser for knowing. While protest signs usually take a hard stance, Jøken’s signs tend to express confusion. They fit a time when the desire to act is suppressed by an paralyzing flood of alarming information. Sometimes they seem to say: “I’m done with it, enough.” Sorry, with a line through it.

The execution is refined. It is painted with acrylic on wood and finished with a deep-gloss epoxy resin layer, making the black almost mirror-like and making the pastel letters appear to float. The back has a mounting system, so the piece can be hung directly.

Seller's Story

Korneel Jeuken is a visual artist, cartoonist and illustrator. Under his alias Jøken, he has been making comic art paintings and drawings with a recognizable character for a number of years. The 'Blockheads' that he paints on the most diverse materials depict crazy characters, but also the need to hide as a creature behind a mask and to take on a new identity. Jøken calls the work 'New Cubism' because he has always had a fascination for the movement between the spatial and the flat surface. In his earlier work this led to abstract paintings and installations that depicted his inner world in an architectural way. It still plays a role in the current work because the figures in his world are often also built from blocks. Yet he does not want to limit himself to blocks. The making process must remain intuitive. Small sketches created in a stream of consciousness form the basis for paintings on wood, cardboard or canvas. Devils, rabbits, kings and skeletons, often dressed in suits and ties, inhabit the colorful world of Jøken: an apparently cheerful whole of neatly designed madness... Korneel Jeuken (Venray NL 1975) was educated at the St. Joost Academy and the Piet Zwart Institute and exhibited at home and abroad. He draws current cartoons for the daily newspaper De Gelderlander
