Valère Maxime by Valerius Maximus and Claveret is a French-language 1659 edition, described as the first edition in this format and complete in two volumes.
Description from the seller
Ancient book from the 17th century, very rare, complete in two volumes and bound in a sturdy volume in good condition (see attached photos).
The work compiles hundreds of short narratives on Roman and Greek history organized by themes (the good natural, the greatness of courage, cruelty, piety, courage, anger, justice, patience, etc.). In classical times, this book served as an absolute reference for orators, writers and students who drew moral examples from it.
epistle signed: Your very humble & very obedient servant, Claveret
Jean Claveret (c. 1590–1666), a lawyer, playwright (famous rival of Pierre Corneille during the Cid quarrel) and French translator. It is he who translated Valère Maxime’s works from Latin into French (his translation was first published in 1647 before being reissued several times, notably in 1659 and 1665).
Half-leather binding, headbands, tail-pieces, vignette on title page, format 13 x 8.5 cm, title piece, very fine 17th-century edition, extremely rare and complete in 2 volumes – see photos.
Pagination:
Volume 1: 3ff + tables + 438 pages.
Volume 2: tables + 336 pages.
The photos accompany the description.
Very beautiful 17th-century work, extremely rare.
The order will be shipped only with a tracking number.
