An antique, complete set of 28 dominoes dating from 1880–1920, made of bone and ebony in an original beechwood box.
Description from the seller
Beautiful, authentic antique domino set. The set is still completely intact: 28 tiles with the original beechwood box. The tiles consist of a block of ebony, onto which an ivory plaque has been riveted with a small copper rivet. The tiles are 4.5 cm long, 2.53 m wide and 1.2 cm(!) thick. The set dates from the late 19th or early 20th century.
The original box, which opens and closes with a sliding lid, is also very beautiful. The tiles are arranged in four rows of seven inside the box. The box is 18 cm long, 6 cm high and 6 cm deep. Together with the tiles, it weighs about 625 g. Both the box and the tiles are very large and relatively heavy compared with many other domino sets of this kind. The thickness of the tiles in particular (almost 1.2 cm) is exceptional. With sets of this kind, the thickness is often between 0.6 cm and 0.8 cm. Most of the thickness comes from the ebony.
The box shows the expected signs of use caused by the wood shrinking and by frequent handling, but these marks are all part of the box’s history; it still looks very good.
The tiles and the box are still completely authentic and have always belonged together.
It is easy to see that the domino tiles and the box were handmade. The dots are not positioned with complete precision. Through years of use, the ivory has developed a lovely sheen, with the ivory’s fibers standing out beautifully against the dark surface. The set evokes a lifetime of games in inns and/or around household tables in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
What makes these tiles special is that the black wood really is ebony, not light-colored wood stained black! This also makes it a luxury version, which must have been quite expensive at the time.
Domino rules
A game of dominoes is played as follows. The players receive an equal number of domino tiles, which they keep hidden from the other players. When it is a player’s turn, they may place a tile at either end of the chain. The number of pips on the sides placed together must match. If they cannot play a tile, they must draw one. The first player to get rid of all their tiles wins the game.
You can still play dominoes with these tiles, of course, but they are also a wonderfully beautiful object to display in a cabinet. Functional and certainly a great conversation piece!
This domino set will be carefully packed and shipped insured.
