Francesca Klein’s *Il libro del chiodo* is a 2004 first edition in this format, with a facsimile and critical edition of Florence’s register of sentences, in Italian and Latin, hardcover with a slipcase.
Description from the seller
Book of Sentences Against Rebellious Families, Municipality of Florence
The Florentine Guelph Party used this register, named after the iron nails on its binding, to record the sentences imposed on its opponents between 1268 and 1379, whether Ghibellines or White Guelphs. It is one of the best-known treasures held by the State Archives of Florence, a source of extraordinary historical interest, celebrated above all for preserving the text of the sentences against Dante Alighieri, who was condemned to exile and the death penalty in 1302. But countless other names appear on the proscription lists contained in this “black book” of the Party, forming a veritable gallery of Florence’s historical luminaries that unfolds before us. Alongside a facsimile reproduction of the register, the volume contains a critical edition of the text, complete with the notes and tools needed for a fuller understanding. The publication offers an exceptionally faithful reproduction of the original, from its outer binding to its pages written in elegant chancery script, allowing a wide readership to fully appreciate the imposing physical presence of this fundamental document in the history of Florence.
Foreword by Alberto Carmi, presentation by Rosalia Manno Tolu, introduction by Riccardo Fubini. With the collaboration of Simone Sartini.
