Description of the work
An elegant abstract composition bearing the stamp of Saul Yurkievich (1931–2005), Argentine poet, writer, and literary critic, and an important figure in 20th-century Latin American intellectual life.
This work on paper stands out for its spontaneous execution and the remarkable freedom of its graphic language.
The artist develops a composition based on the interplay between powerful curved lines drawn in black ink and delicate networks of graphite marks. Broad calligraphic gestures structure the space, while hatching, crosshatching, oblique lines, and interwoven marks add rhythm and depth.
The deliberately asymmetrical composition plays on the contrast between densely worked areas and large expanses left blank. Variations in the intensity and thickness of the line create a particularly expressive visual tension.
The work evokes explorations in gestural abstraction and automatic drawing, in a spirit close to the graphic experiments of the 20th-century avant-garde.
The simplicity of the means employed, combined with great formal freedom, gives this work a decidedly modern character.
