A superb first edition by Voltaire, who began the composition of his main scientific work in the summer of 1736, inspired by the mathematical and scientific studies of the Marquise Du Châtelet and the example by Francesco Algarotti. 

He proposes to convert the French to Newtonianism; rejecting dialogue used by Fontenelle, Algarotti and others, and, in order to bring science within the reach of the public, he adopts a serious tone, geometric illustrations and calculations.
The work was published before Voltaire had sent in the end of the 23rd and the 24th chapters; despite his reticence, the Dutch publisher had this edition completed by an anonymous mathematician and added to the title that was available to everyone.
