In heel Afrika wordt al eeuwenlang kralen van bot gesneden.
De traditie gaat door tot op de dag van vandaag.
In Kenia snijden en vormen bekwame ambachtslieden gerecycled koeienbot.
Ze kopen zakken geschrobd koeienbot (en soms kameel) van de plaatselijke slachthuizen. Vervolgens snijden en vormen ze de kralen in verschillende ontwerpen met behulp van elektrische zagen en slijpstenen.
Vervolgens dopen ze de kralen in een oplossing van kaliumpermanganaat, die het bot donkerbruin kleurt.
Na het kleuren polijsten ze de kralen tot een glanzende finish.
