Gino Brogi (1902-1989) - Natura morta

Important still life painted by Gino Brogi (Prato, 1902–1989), an artist belonging to the milieu of the so-called School of Prato.

Executed in 1967, the work depicts an essential composition with two fish, bottles and a terracotta jug. The solid and simplified forms, the earthy color range, and the balanced construction of space evoke the climate of the “return to order,” aimed at recovering the tradition of Italian figurative painting after the experiments of the historical avant-gardes.

The thick paint and the refined tonal harmony give the surface a quasi-mural appearance, close to the suggestion of antique fresco. For sensitivity and research of a simple and concrete painting, the work is placed in the Tuscan artistic context close to the experiences of Ardengo Soffici and, more generally, to the Novecento poetics of Carlo Carrà.

The work is signed at the bottom right and bears on the verso the artist’s name and the date 1967.

The painter Gino Brogi, born in Prato in 1902, was one of the protagonists of the so-called
