Le Corbusier, Aircraft. The new vision, a 1988 Universe reprint in English, hardback with dust jacket, 96 pages (80 gravure photos and 16 pages of text), 252 × 190 mm, in fine condition.
Description from the seller
GREAT OPPORTUNITY to purchase this WONDERFUL REPRINT of the BRILLIANT ORIGINAL TITLE from 1935 by legendary Le Corbusier - the ONLY PHOTOBOOK BY THE ARTIST DURING LIFETIME.
Charles-Édouard Jeanneret (1887-1965), known as Le Corbusier, was a French-Swiss architectural designer, painter, urban planner and writer who was one of the pioneers of what is now regarded as modern architecture.
Mentioned in:
Fotostiftung Schweiz, Swiss Photobooks from 1927 to the present, A Different History of Photobooks, pages 70-77.
Originally published in 1935 by The Studio Ltd. in London.
Hard to find, nearly impossible to find with the original dustjacket (even the "Fotostiftung Schweiz" shows a picture with missing part).
BREATH-TAKING LAYOUT, TYPOGRAPHY AND PHOTOGRAPHY.
"The New Vision" was a series begun by "The Studio"; "Aircraft" is No.1.
Aircraft" was the publisher's title, Corbusier added his own, "L'avion accuse ..." ("The airplane indicts").
Le Corbusier loved the airplane for itself (form and function, material use) and as a metaphor for what it and its like will do for humanity. Le Corbusier extolled "The Birds-Eye View" of what man has created and what man must change.
Studio had the intention of publishing a book on aviation, to inform the public, thus the stirring work of the men in the air will in no sense be tinged by my technical ignorance.
A FANTASTIC PHOTOBOOK - NOT ONLY FOR AVIATION ENTHUSIASTS.
WITH THE HIGHLY IMPRESSIVE ORIGINAL DUSTJACKET.
BOOK AND DUSTJACKET - IN EXCELLENT, VERY FRESH CONDITION.
Welcome to the next edition of the VERY POPULAR SINGLE-SELLER-AUCTIONS by 5Uhr30.com (Ecki Heuser, Cologne, Germany). This time with a BEST-OF-SELECTION from 1926 to 2026, so of the last 100 (!) years of photobook history.
"Le Corbusier was born in Switzerland to French-speaking Swiss parents and acquired French nationality in 1930. He designed buildings in Europe, Japan, India, and the Americas during a five-decade career. He considered that "the roots of modern architecture are to be found in Viollet-le-Duc."
Dedicated to providing better living conditions for the residents of crowded cities, Le Corbusier was influential in urban planning, and was a founding member of the Congrès International d'Architecture Moderne (CIAM). Le Corbusier prepared the master plan for the city of Chandigarh in India, and contributed specific designs for several buildings there, especially the government buildings. In 2016, seventeen projects by Le Corbusier in seven countries were inscribed in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites as The Architectural Work of Le Corbusier, an Outstanding Contribution to the Modern Movement.
Le Corbusier remains a controversial figure. Some of his urban planning ideas have been criticized for their indifference to pre-existing cultural sites, societal expression and equality, and his alleged ties with fascism, antisemitism, eugenics, and the dictator Benito Mussolini have resulted in some continuing contention. Le Corbusier also designed well-known furniture such as the LC4 chaise longue and the LC1 chair, both made of leather with metal framing."
