Un rare instrument de musique, Sarangi.
Inde, 19ème siècle, Gujarat (Sud-ouest Rajasthan).

Cette vièle populaire est dénommée gujaratan sarangi et est joué par la communauté de musiciens langa qui sont établis au Rajasthan, dans le désert du Thar.

Vièle à manche court taillée dans un seul bloc de bois. La caisse au dos cylindrique est cintrée et une peau d'animaux en recouvre l'ouverture. Des clous de tapissier soulignent la base de la caisse ainsi que le volumineux chevillier cubique. Ce dernier comporte 4 chevilles d'accord et 1 pièce de bois tournée composée de 3 disques superposés et de taille décroissante qui orne le sommet de l'instrument. Une série d'orifices, disposés en diagonale sur toute la longueur de ce cartouche, sont destinés au passage des cordes  qui viennent se fixer aux chevilles (certaines manquantes) situées sur la paroi latérale du manche. 
Des peintures aux pigments rouges, verts, noir, ainsi que de la fibre végétale/laque viennent embellir l'instrument sur certaines parties.

état : ancienne patine, cassures et manques.
