Eugen Osswald, born 22 January 1879 in Stuttgart; died 17 February 1960 in Munich. At the age of 18 he began training as a draftsman in the architectural office of Heinrich Deichsel in Stuttgart. However, after completing his military service in the Infantry Regiment Kaiser Friedrich No. 125, he transferred to the Munich Academy of Fine Arts. After completing his studies, around 1905/07, he spent a year in Paris. In 1910 he travelled to the Middle East. Many of his animal studies arose on journeys with large circus companies. In addition to his paintings, Osswald also created illustrations for children's books. He belonged to the Impressionist tradition; typical of his paintings are broad brushstrokes and a bright color palette. Osswald frequently exhibited at the Munich Glaspalast. The Bavarian State Painting Collections own a painting titled Parakeet and Canary by Osswald from 1920.
