Le maschere N’tomo sono tra le più interessanti maschere Bambara (o Bamana). Sono caratterizzate da un volto umano di forma ovale sormontato da un'alta cresta di punte verticali o corna.
 
Ci sono sei società di iniziazione maschile che i giovani maschi devono attraversare prima di diventare uomini. N'tomo Dyo è la prima che i ragazzi devono affrontare prima di essere circoncisi. La maschera rappresenta il leggendario antenato dei Bambara ed è un simbolo di protezione.
 
La maschera è fatta di legno e può essere ricoperta di conchiglie, semi o borchie di ottone. Il viso può essere più o meno astratto ma è sempre sormontato da una fila di proiezioni verticali. Il numero di punte indica se la maschera è maschile, femminile o androgina. Tre, sei o nove sono maschili; quattro e otto sono femminili; due, cinque e sette sono androgine. La maschera era utilizzata anche durante le feste agricole e per prevenire le malattie.
 
Anche molti altri rituali come matrimoni, nascite e funerali venivano accompagnati da queste maschere. La maschera veniva usata anche per offerte e sacrifici e in casi specifici veniva sepolta ritualmente quando non serviva più e il suo potere era svanito. I Bambara sono abili agricoltori e hanno un forte legame con la terra. Credono che la maschera N’tomo garantisca un buon raccolto e celebri un agricoltore con grandi capacità.
 
Il percorso di iniziazione prevedeva che i giovani ragazzi andassero a vivere lontani dal villaggio, nella foresta, per un certo periodo di tempo. Al rientro nel villaggio si dovevano esibire nei balli e nelle canzoni che avevano appreso nel periodo di isolamento per ricevere piccoli doni dagli spettatori. Dopo di che affrontavano delle abluzioni rituali che segnavano la fine dell’adolescenza e l’inizio della vita adulta. Senza questi passaggi, credevano che il caos sarebbe arrivato nel villaggio, che i raccolti non sarebbero prosperati e non avrebbero potuto celebrare i riti che scandivano la vita della comunità.
