This 1850 watercolour by Hermanus Koekkoek Sr. depicts the off loading of fishing vessels and comes sold with a hand crafted frame from the Netherlands.
Description from the seller
Hermanus Koekkoek sr., the youngest son of marine painter Johannes Hermanus, succeeded his father as a marine painter when his older brother Johannes passed away in 1831. In 1832, one could see for the first time a ‘raging water’ of his at the Exhibition of Living Masters in Amsterdam. Hermanus sr. was born in Middelburg, then lived in Durgerdam by the Zuiderzee, and subsequently moved to Amsterdam in 1832 or 1833. There, he experienced a very successful career as a painter of sea, beach, and river scenes for fifty years. Ships in stormy weather, on gentle waves, or on mirror-smooth water were his specialty. Besides, he also painted several tree-filled landscapes. In Hermanus's work, the influence of father Johannes Hermanus is evident in the detailed depiction of the vessels, the characteristic drawing of the water, and the lively, narrative embellishment. With fine brushstrokes and the same eye for detail, he painted the daily life of the fishing people on the ships. This eye for detail is perfectly represented in this watercolor.
