Etat présent de la Grande Russie ou Moscovie, translated from English by Jean Perry, is a 1718 first edition published in Paris by Joseph Mongé, bound in full calf leather with 510 pages and dimensions of 16 x 10 cm, in very good condition, with the large folding map absent.
Description from the seller
Current state of the Great Russia or Muscovy, containing the abbreviated history of Muscovy. A chronological summary of the tsars or emperors who have reigned there, up to the present. And the account of what Pietro Alexeovich, the reigning sovereign, has done most notably in his realms. Paris, at Joseph Mongé 1718.
VI-76 + 83+339 pp., with a table in alphabetical order. 17 x 10 cm.
Binding worn but sound (period, publisher) in full calfskin, spine with 5 ribs (spine in need of restoration but sound and solid). Wear and rubbing from use (not severe) on the binding. Interior satisfactory, map in good condition.
Rare copy, illustrated with a portrait of Peter I at Thomassin's frontispiece. The large fold-out map of the Great Russia is missing.
This edition was issued by Hugony, following Peter I's travels to France. As with the texts then available on Russia, it is a seventeenth-century account written by an English engineer who was employed in Russia for many years; the historical portions proper to the narrative have been updated. This report is highly regarded; it is the first to have provided us with accurate notions about Russia: religion and customs, the achievements of the Tsars...
